Editing the Music Video

We finished filming so now we have to edit our music video. We decided to edit on December 1st. My group and I decided that we were gonna edit at my house. Before my group members got here, I went through all the footage to see what i thought were the best scenes. There was a lot of footage to go through. Each scene was probably filmed at least 5 times so altogether it was most likely 60 videos to go through. Once my group member Brooke got here, we went through the footage together while we waited for Madeline to get to my place. While we were going through the footage I found my personal favorite scenes. Once our group member Madeline got there we told her what we thought the best scenes were. She agreed with us and we started editing.
The previous project that we had to edit really helped when it cane to editing this music video. Editing is such a vital process to this whole thing. Editing is what allows the story to truly come together all into one beautiful masterpieces. Because of the previous knowledge, it was a pretty smooth process this time around. Once we were already, everything was imported into the laptop. From there we picked out the scenes that we had agreed were the best ones. I then put all those scenes together into the slot. It was ultimately about  a minute and twenty seconds of footage from the clips we chose so I trimmed it down to about a minute and thirteen seconds which is right below the maximum criteria needed. We stuck to jump cuts since that’s what made the video look the smoothest. This stage was pretty simple and efficient.
I then cut the sound from all the clips so that they would be silent. This wasn’t difficult and was done pretty quickly. The song was then added into the video. We had to make sure it fit in place with the scenes and went along with the lip syncing in certain parts. This caused for a little trimming on some of the scenes and making some of them back to the original length. The video was still around the same time as before. That was essentially the whole editing process for the music video. It was easier and faster than last time seeing that it didn’t take us that long to piece it all together. Editing is a truly beautiful process since it allows you to create your vision. We may tweak it a little bit before we turn it in but it’s really rewarding seeing the final product.

Music Video Filming: Actually Filming

We just had our thanksgiving break which meant we had another opportunity to film for our music video. Unlike last weekend we actually were able to film this time. We planned to film on November 29th and that’s what needed up happening. My group members Brooke and Madeline came to my place around noon. From the second they got there we started filming. The first setting that we filmed at was my room. Our first scene shot was my waking up and checking the alarm clock. This is because it goes in like with the lyrics of the song. This was difficult for me in the beginning because I kept laughing since I normally don’t have to act. This one scene took nearly 30 minutes, but after that it was a smooth process.
Our next set of scenes involved me opening the house door and then the car door. This time around it was simpler for me since I didn’t feel awkward being filmed anymore. This only took a couple of minutes seeing that they were pretty simple shots. Throughout our filming I made sure to remind my group mates to use certain shots that we need to use. I was very relaxed for the rest of the filming but my group members overthought the process a lot. I kept reminding them that it’s a music video and that we’re supposed to be having fun with it. With my dad’s permission, we filmed a couple scenes in his card. I was filmed enter the car and later on exiting the car. Both scenes take place at different times but we wanted to film everything we need in the car at that one time. This only took about 20 minutes and my group and I moved onto our next and final location.
We then ordered an uber and went to a park near my house. Since I was sitting in the passengers seat, I filmed some exterior shots of the traffic that we may use in the music video. Once we got to the park we dived straight in to finish filming. We filmed everything in the order that it came into our minds at the park. We also filmed a bunch of extra scenes incase we may not like our original scenes. For a small portion of scenes all three of us were filmed, so our friend Paige helped us out with those scenes. One of those scenes involved us just chilling and singing the lyrics. I was then filmed singing the lyrics separately since I was considered the main character. We finished the rest of our shots and that was the end of our filming process. Overall, it was different being filmed instead of being the filmed but it was enjoyable and we got the results we wanted.

Music Video Filming: Filming but not Actually

This weekend was the first opportunity we were given to film. Unfortunately, my group and I couldn’t film over the weekend. I was busy during the weekend doing things both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday I was helping my mom watch my little sister and on Sunday I was running errands with my dad while also having to study for a chemistry test. Sometimes family takes priority over things like this and we still have more chances to film so I think it was fine that we didn’t film this weekend. My group and I had also discussed the unlikely hood of us being able to film over the weekend, so we didn’t end up checking out any equipment such as the tripod. With that being the case, even if availability for us to film became available, we would’ve been vastly underprepared. We still have thanksgiving break to film and the week after to edit so as long as we don’t procrastinate we’ll be fine. We have a plan for which day we plan on filming and in what order we want film. In reality, i’m not that stressed seeing that we have so much time left.
I plan on filming with my group on 11/29. We all have pretty busy schedules seeing that it’s thanksgiving break and that’s one of the only days we’re all available. I’m personally busy on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, which makes Friday the best chance to film. There are some small parts of the music video that we can film on our own, so I’ll probably try and get the best shot i can for those parts before we edit. I’m prepared to film on 11/29 unlike this weekend. We have a plan on around what time we’re gonna meet up, where we’re gonna meet up, and where we’re going to film. This will allow for a smooth process once we get our first real opportunity to film. Filming then also allows us to have approval form our parents which is very important when it comes to this. If we are unable to get all our shots done due to maybe the sun setting early, we will still have Sunday to film. We have time in our hands so everything will work out.
Just because I couldn’t film over the weekend doesn’t mean I did nothing at all. I personally brainstormed some more ideas on how we may edit the music video. Editing is a crucial part so the more ideas the better chances that the video could look nicer. I also happen to be the main person being filmed this time around. This caused me to try and decide what I wanted my costume to be. In the beginning of the music video i’m wearing sleepwear but after that i’m in normal clothing. I decided on what costume I would do for the sleepwear but I only thought of some possible outfit combinations for the normal clothing. Overall, my group and I weren’t able to film this weekend, but I was still able to get things done that will help once we start filming. Complications arise sometimes but that won’t stop us from doing what we have to do. I’m just really excited to finally start filming this music video!

Storyboard for Music Video

My group and I are going to be filming a music video for the song “8TEEN” by Khalid pretty soon. Before then we’ll have to storyboard our ideas. The storyboard allows us to have a general idea of what we’re gonna film and what we’ll be incorporating. We’ll be incorporating multiple shots, movements, and angles throughout our video. For example, our first scene involves us filming our group member Leo waking up and we think a high angle would establish this the best. We’ll include other high and low angles somewhere in the video to show everything that we’ll be doing. The next scene would involve us using a long shot to film Leo opening his bedroom door. An action match, which is a fork of editing, allows for our next scene to happen which is Leo opening the rest of the car door. A wide shot will be used here to establish our member Leo and the car. The shots/angles/movements help build on what’s being filmed.
When it comes to the mis en scene we plan on acting as friends who know each other. Throughout the ending scenes in the storyboard you can see us acting as if we’re friends hanging out. Our costumes were dependent on the setting which is shown in the storyboard. The first setting is at a house so sleeping attire. The other setting is outside and at a park so normal attire. Natural lighting will be used since the daylight will be present during the park scenes. We will mostly film handheld so a more natural look of teenagers having fun is shown. Our sound is our song choice which was 8TEEN by Khalid. When it comes to editing we have a couple ideas. We want to include an action match during our second scene involving opening a bedroom door then cutting to a car door. We plan on using a reaction shot for the scene where Leo smells the thing in the car. We also plan on using jump cuts, dissolves, and fade outs for a nice and smooth process.

Planning Blog for Music Video

Today we’re currently planning for our music video. This is essential so we can have a smooth process once we start filming. A plan last time helped us tremendously, so we’re sure it’ll help us this time. The main parts of our planning involves location, health & safety, props, costumes, and our schedule.
1. Location-  We have a couple of locations we plan on filming at. One of the locations would be at our group member Leo’s house. A couple of our scenes involve him waking up so we plan on filming in his house. We’ll also be filming around the exterior of his house. We will also film around his neighborhood for scenes possibly involving the road. We will also be filing at the part for the second half of the music video.
2. Health & Safety- When it comes to health and safety, there are some precautions. We plan on filming some scenes in a car. Since we plan on filming in a car, we will wear seatbelts as a precaution incase we have to drive. In that situation, we’ll have an adult present just incase. If we have to walk and cross any roads, we’ll check both sides and make sure no cars are coming.
3. Props- We’ll be using a couple of props during the filming. We’ll need a car. This is for certain scenes where it talks about the way a car smells and talks about traffic. We’ll also need a phone for our beginning scene. We’ll need it to show the time, which is needed for our opening scene.
4. Costumes- For the music videos there aren’t that many costumes we will need. For the first couple of scenes we may need our group member Leo to wear sleeping attire. That would consist of gym shorts and a shirt. For the rest we will all be in normal attire. That will most likely be jeans, shirts, and sneakers. Our music video is essentially showing teenagers so that’s why it will be normal attire.
5. Schedule- Our schedule may change based on availability. Right now we have three dates we can all possibly film. Those dates are November 27, November 29 and December 1. These are the only dates where we can all most likely get together. We plan on editing the following week during our class periods and at home.

Intro to Music Video

We are officially done with the Gatorade commercial. There are a couple of things we will probably do different for the music video. I think we most likely are going to use our phones to film the commercial instead of the cameras. The phones just allow us to film more frequently.  This time we have to film outside of school instead of on campus. I think this will actually be better seeing that we’ll have so many more locations we can go film at now. I’m way more exited to do the music video seeing that we get to decide what song we want to do.
The song we ended up choosing was 8TEEN by Khalid. I went through my music playlists to try and find songs that we could consider using. We didn’t really know what type of song we wanted to do. We just chose what we thought was the best that could be filmed. Khalid’s songs allow for a story to be heard and makes it easy to make a video. I think the chill sound and storytelling allows for a simple process.
The genre that our song is in is R&B/Soul. This genre usually consists of medium shots and close-up shots. These camera angles are normally the most popular and are used a lot in this genre. They film slowly and the camera doesn’t move very fast. The sounds are are mainly smooth and calmly but sometimes can be more uplifting.
1. Costumes: The costumes are generally normal attire. In the music videos, the people wear everyday clothing.
2. Lighting: The lighting normally used is natural lighting or indoor lighting. They use this lighting because in the videos, they are mainly outside and indoor.
3. Actors: The people acting appear to be normal people and appear as friends to the music artist. This is mostly because in the videos the people seem to have some form of a relationship.
4. Makeup: In most music videos like ours, there doesn’t appear to be much makeup. The girls would wear everyday makeup.
5. Props- The props used are usually cars and items that fit the lyrics in the song. This is because the lyrics tend to tell a certain story.
6. Setting- The setting in these type of music videos are at normal places depending on what the lyrics are trying to say. They can vary from houses, the beach, or the mall.

Editing Blog 2

These past 2 days we finally got computers that allowed us to edit. Last time pinnacle studios wasn’t working and all the technology was messing up. I was so happy that we would finally be able to edit. The first day that we had a computer to edit on we had to figure out how to get our footage onto pinnacle studies. With the other computers we had a folder with our footage, but now it was all on our google drive so we didn’t know what to do from there. The first thing I did was log onto my google drive since that’s the one we were using.  We all tried thinking of what to do and then decided that we should just download all the footage. The footage got downloaded and then we figured out we could just put it in a folder. Once the footage was all imported I looked through every single clip with my group members. This took a while since each scene had a couple of takes.
Just trying to figure everything out and import had taken us about twenty minutes of the class time we had. The first thing we did was go through our opening clip which was Madeline walking onto the track. Since all the footage was on my google drive I had already gone through it earlier. This meant that I had some knowledge on which clips we should use for our commercial. I told Brooke to go use the second take since I knew the first take was essentially a blooper. Now we went to look at the next takes which were of madeline unzipping the duffle bag. I grew a little frustrated since the footage in pinnacle studios kept lagging. After the best clip was chosen we essentially did that for the whole period. I noticed that we didn’t have that much time left and grew a little worried that we wouldn’t be able to finish next class. I made sure everything was saved, logged out, and then carried on with the day.
Today, I quickly went to class because I knew we would have less time to work on the commercial today. I grabbed the computer and logged onto my account since that’s what everything was on. Another group came and interrupted us since apparently their footage was also on that computer, so I had to log out and wait for them to finish. After that I logged back into my account and waited for Brooke to open pinnacle studios. Pinnacle studios was taking a while to open so I started to panic since it wouldn’t open. My group members kept trying to get it to start while I asked someone else if they knew what we could do. I went to grab another computer but was disappointed since that meant all the editing we did on the other computer was for nothing. Technology failed us once again so we prepared to work on it during the weekend. The good thing is that we weren’t that far along so it’s not as big of a struggle then it could’ve been. My group members and I plan on FaceTiming this weekend and finishing the editing.

Editing the Commercial

Today we were supposed to start editing. I got into class and saw my group member so we decided to go check the computers. I logged onto my account since that’s the account we dumped everything in the previous day. I opened the folder we had made to see if we had everything and to make sure if any more filming was needed. We noticed that we didn’t record any voiceovers so we decided to go back out to film some quick voiceovers. We went outside but we had to keep moving around since there were a lot of noises in our background. My group member and I went to the track since no one was there and started to film the voiceovers. At first I had no clue what we wanted to say so we quickly watched some gatorade ads to get some inspiration. After that I decided that I was gonna be the one who did the talking so we quickly filmed that. Once the voiceover filming was complete we went back to class.
Once we got back to class I went to log back into my computer. It was taking a while to load in so I got a little worried. I struggled a little to find the footage but we ended up finding it. We dumped all the new footage into the folder I had previously made. After the dumping was done I noticed that the pinnacle studies logo wasn’t there. I went crazy in my head because I thought we were going to fail our commercial now. Luckily right after I noticed, my teachers made an announcement that pinnacle studios wasn’t working so we should just upload everything into our google drive. In that moment I got so relieved. At first I had no clue how to even access google drive. I went to go ask my friend to see if she knew how to do it and she happened to know what to do.
Once she came to help; I logged into my google drive. My group member started to do the rest of stuff so I didn’t really know what else to do. It was honestly pretty frustrating that the computer wasn’t allowing pinnacle studios to work. Now the editing has to happen next class, which sucks because I came into today thinking that the commercial would’ve been edited a good amount. While everything was uploading to the google drive I thought of some things we can do once we edit. For music we could do intensifying music since that’s some music they use in gatorade commercials. I think most of our transitions will be jump cuts and that’ll work out best for our commercial. I have an idea on which parts of the commercial we should put the voiceovers in. All the footage ended up uploading into my google drive so we were done for the day. Overall, it sucks that we couldn’t edit today but this prepares us for setbacks that may come again.

Filming the Commercial

Today we started to film. Early on in the process we knew who was gonna do what for our commercial. My role was essentially the person who filmed during the whole time. While I was filming I kept trying to refer to what I remembered was in most gatorade ads so that we could get a really good outcome. I would say that we mostly stuck to the ideas we had on our storyboard. There were a couple of different changes but that’s because we had to adapt to our environment. I think dealing with the heat was probably one of the most challenging parts since all our shots were outside. I thought that we needed to change one scene from our storyboard so it would seem more serious. I was really stressed that we wouldn’t finish while we were filming and at times would be a little strict with my group members to make sure we would film enough. Overall, it was really enjoyable just filming and getting the shots that I thought would come out the best.
All of our filming was done near the track and on the track. Since this was the first time I ever really filmed on a camera I had to make sure with my group member Brooke that I was doing everything right . For our first scene I had to film my group member Madeline walking on to the track. It’s a pretty simple process until you realize you need to wait for all the people who are walking the track to get out of the frame. While filming this opening scene, more people started coming on to the track which ended up just delaying our filming more. I was able to knock a couple of shots off our list here such as using a long shot and a medium shot. I decided that we should film it a couple of times to make sure it looks good and that we have enough footage of it. It’s essentially a short scene since it’s the beginning of our commercial but it starts off everything so I had to make sure it looked right. To show a passage of time I filmed her walking onto the track, aimed the camera towards her feet, paused it there, and recorded again in our new location in the same position. After this we went to our other location which was the track.
Most of the filming was done here on the track. Once we got on the track we realized we only had little batches of time to film because at times people would be walking in our way. The next scene I filmed  was Madeline getting ready to run the track. For the scene I filmed her taking her shoes out her bag and putting them on, so I decided to use a high angle for this shot since it looked like it would portray it the best. The next scene is where we decided to diverge a little from our storyboard. Originally we were gonna have Madeline fall and Brooke throw a gatorade bottle at Madeline, but we thought that would be too silly since gatorade commercials are more about trying harder and not giving up. Instead for the next part in the commercial, we decided we were just gonna film multiple scenes of Madeline falling and essentially “failing” but not giving up. For this scene we set up the tripod and used a pan to focus on her. After that I filmed a close up shot of her drinking the gatorade and having one more attempt at it. Finally, we did our final scene which is where I filmed her starting to run again, let her run out of the frame, and then filmed her running back in the frame from the other side to show that she completed running the track. There was one more quick thing we wanted to film but we’ll just film it next class since we had to go back and dump our footage.

Storyboard Blog

Today in class we started storyboarding for our commercial.  For our commercial we plan on using low angles for certain scenes. We will most likely use eye level shots during scenes of the track. We plan on using tilt for a certain scene of our subject getting ready to run. We also plan on using a flash pan for a certain scene where our subject regains energy and can run again after drinking the product. For shots we will be using establishing shots to show our location of filming and close ups to intensify the scenes. We will also use wide shots for when our subject is in a certain location. For editing transitions we aren’t entirely sure yet but we have some ideas. We will most likely use a jump cut, cutaway, and possibly a fade out in our commercial.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today in class we learned about starting the camera, the procedures for it, editing, and all the things involved with editing. Most of the things learned were pretty basic to process, but the lesson did help a lot. The procedure for the camera were simple instructions to make sure we use them the right way. Before we start anything we have to sign all the equipment out. To use the camera we flip the handle to start it, put in the SD card, press record, press the record button again to pause, and close it to finish. We also get to use tripods which i find pretty interesting since i’ve always wanted to use them before. To use the tripod you have to pop the legs open, look for the plaque near the silver button, screw it on the camera, and then tighten it onto the tripod. A really useful thing about the tripod is that we can use the handles to get pan or tilt shots. There’s also a little crane on it that allows us to raise it up which helps us with possibly high angles. These were essentially the knowledge we needed for when we go out to film.
Before we can even start editing we learned that you need to dump all the footage first.  Dumping is essentially where we put all the footage from the camera onto the computer. At our school we have something called pinnacle studios that allows us to do all of this. Before we even put everything into the computers you have to take the SD card and put it into the SD Card Reader. Then you put the reader into the usb port and make a folder that you can put all the footage in. Once all the footage is out in we have to check a section called DCIM for the footage. If the footage isn’t found there than you click private, look for AUCHD, and click stream. After this you highlight all the footage and move it into the folder. Once you’ve done everything you can take the SD card reader out and put the SD card away. This is a crucial thing I needed to learn for the editing stage.
Lastly, I learned everything required to start importing, editing, and exporting footage. The first thing you have to do is import the footage from the desktop to pinnacle studios. To do that you have to look for where it says import, look for the folder you previously made, and then it’ll import all the footage. Now we can start editing all of our raw footage. You put all the footage on AV track 2 since you went the title on AV track 1 and the soul  on AV track 3. If i wanted to cut the footage, I was advised to move the film right before i want to cut it, then click the razor blade icon which splits the footage, and then delete the footage I wanted cut out. If I wanted to add transitions I would click where it says effects editor and it gives me a variety of options to choose from. Another thing with editing that I learned was adding music. To add music, first you need to make sure it’s an mp3, then you add into the folder, and import it the same way you would import footage. If you would want to detach audio sound from the footage, you would click the clip, right click do you can detach it, and then you can delete the audio. Once you’re done editing for the day you can go to files, click save movie as, go to your folder and click save. Once you’re done with the whole project you’re editing, you can export it (but make sure it’s a mp4) by clicking export, choosing the best quality, click start export, and then put it into the folder. Before shutting down the editing software make sure it’s saved on the folder or else all your progress will be lost and nobody wants that. After this lesson i’m prepared to go out and film and edit to the best of my ability.

Planning Blog for Gatorade Commercial

Today our group is currently planning our gatorade commercial. Right now we’re discussing what props we need. We need to know what we are going to need to bring in so that we have everything and can film our commercial. We are also talking about the costumes, schedule, locations, and back-up plans. It is very important that we plan what we are going to film so that we can be efficient and use time wisely. These all matter because with the proper supplies and the proper plan we can make our commercial look to the best of its ability.

1. Props:
gatorade items such as drinks and protein bars.
duffel bag acting as it has sport supplies in it.
2. Costumes:
athletic clothing such as shorts, jerseys, and sneakers.
3. Schedule:
        10/10- planning
        10/14- storyboard
        10/21- filming
        10/23- editing
4. Location list:
track- here we will run around the track, football field is also there incase we want to use it                 parking lot- to show us walking from there to track
5. Back-up Plan:
Media Center Stairs- incase it rains we can use the stairs to show us running up and down them                       Incase someone is missing- for the scene when someone would hand the runner the gatorade bottle, instead we’ll show the runner walking back to the bag and getting the bottle

Research Codes and Conventions

Today we got assigned our commercial project. We were given an option of up to four people in a group and we decided to work as a group of three. Our teachers gave us three options to choose from for our commercial. The options were a list of products, an anti-vaping campaign, or a commercial about our school. We decided to look at the list of products and ended up choosing to do a gatorade commercial.  Right now we have to research the codes and conventions that are typically in gatorade commercials.
Our group was unsure of what codes and conventions were so we started off by figuring out what they mean. Some examples of codes in gatorade commercials would be the setting, objects, clothing, and captions. The setting is normally at a sports field or in a gym. The objects are typically things that show the product like gatorade bottles and athletes. The athletes are usually shown drinking the product and then playing a sport. They’re shown as working hard after drinking the gatorade, which seems like it gives them energy. Clothing that the actors in the commercials wear are typically sports attire and athletics wear. The captions are their slogans or message they’re trying to get across about gatorade.
The conventions in gatorade commercials involve the camera angles, editing, lighting, and sound/music. They normally show close up angles of athletes and sometimes of them drinking the gatorade. The close ups are typically them preparing for what they’re about to do. The lighting is usually dim in certain scenes. The camera is often moving to show the actions that are going on and is never really still. The sound/music in these commercials are normally intense. The sound shows that there’s a lot of action going on or that they’re working harder. All of this is typically after drinking the gatorade. They use the sound effects of crowds to intensify the importance and excitement of the commercial. This is what compiles a gatorade commercial.

Intro Blog

Hey everybody, my name is Leonardo but I prefer being called Leo. I would say that I consider myself a chill person for the most part. I'm a social person and can make conversation pretty quickly. People describe me as a funny, outgoing, and smart person. In my free time I normally hangout with my friends and just have a good time with them. It's probably the thing I enjoy most. Going to the pool is also something I enjoy. The one thing I don't like is waking up at 5:30 am everyday for school. I think its too early, but I chose going to my school and that just happens to be one thing that came along with it.
I love music. I love almost any music genre except for country music. I personally just don't find country music appealing. My favorite genres are probably hip-hop/rap or R&B. My favorite artists to listen to are Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, and 6lack. The first two artist just put me in a really good mood when I listen to them and the third artists relaxes me. Music puts me in a good mood and can make me feel really happy. During the morning bus rides I listen to chill music to get me relaxed and during school if I do listen to music, I listen to music that keeps me more in a good vibe.
I'm currently a sophomore and have eight classes, I have my first four on a days and the other four on b days. My first period is Aice Euro which I think is a pretty interesting class. My second period is Chemistry Honors which I find a little difficult at times. My third period is Pre-Calculus Honors and I enjoy it a lot since I love math. My fourth period is Aice Thinking Skills and I would say it is a non-stressful class. That is what I have every a days and although I get a lot of work I actually enjoy those classes. My fifth period is Aice Media Studies and I can't wait to start filming. My sixth period is study hall and that just allows me to do homework or just take a break. My seventh period is Aice English which is an easy class, but it's not my favorite. My eighth period is French II Honors and I really enjoy learning that language. Those are my b day classes and those are pretty chill days. That's all for now.
See you later,
Leonardo
